Million Changes & Me

Abstract

In an era where the climate crisis looms large, significant international interventions and grand technological fixes often overshadow the simple yet crucial impact of daily decisions. Million Changes & Me (MC&Me) addresses this gap by empowering individuals, communities, and institutions to track and celebrate small behavioral shifts that collectively reduce carbon footprints. Unlike traditional carbon calculators that emphasize major purchases or focus on wealthier demographics, MC&Me highlights accessible, everyday actions like using reusable straws, biking instead of driving, or shopping at thrift stores, gardening, etc.

Through its data-driven design, MC&Me aggregates these “little changes” in real time, offering users personalized insights into their collective impact. By gamifying environmental education—featuring challenges, streaks, and community competitions. The app transforms the often daunting topic of climate change into an engaging, inclusive experience. Rather than shaming users for unavoidable emissions, MC&Me encourages and rewards positive choices, fostering a sense of agency and optimism.

Ultimately, MC&Me is an educational tool that galvanizes people of all backgrounds and ages to work toward a greener future. The beta version will focus on a handful of simple options in key areas (e.g., Work, School, Home, Food), with potential for expansion as students and users worldwide contribute ideas. In this way, each “little change” collectively adds up to substantial global impact.

Project Description

MC&Me is a mobile application developed using Flutter, with a Node.js backend and a MongoDB database. The app enables users to create an account, log in, and navigate through various pages: About, Account, Dashboard, Leaderboard, and Pie Chart Quiz.

Once the user is logged in, they are directed to the Dashboard page. This displays the user's total points earned and navigation buttons to the pie chart, leaderboard, and habit tracking.

The Pie Chart page contains a pie chart for navigation between different categories, such as home, community, school, and travel. Upon selecting the fish category, the user is directed to a "Fish Quiz" where they can answer questions about their fish consumption. After each response, a fun fact appears about their choice. After completing the quiz, the user is shown a summary of their answers and the total points they have earned based on their answers. These points are automatically added to the user's total points.

Habit tracking is currently in place, but it is in its early stages. The user can select a category and add a habit to track.

The Leaderboard page displays the top 10 users based on their total points.
